“Last I checked we don’t have a rubber shortage in America. When I was in college we had a machine in the bathroom, you put .50 cents in and voila! So yes, anyone who wants contraceptives can access them, but it’s an utterly made-up nonsense issue.”
That’s Texas Senator Ted Cruz at a presidential campaign event in Iowa Monday night, answering a question about “making contraception available to women who want to control their own bodies.” Cruz doesn’t see why women have a problem so long as men can get cheap condoms. Seriously.
Even more stunning is that Cruz also used the question to claim that the “war on women” is a myth. So all the right-wing efforts to cut funding for women’s reproductive health and family planning services and to make abortion care almost impossible to obtain? All the efforts to prevent women from controlling their own bodies? “Made-up nonsense,” he says.
Polls show that Cruz’s support for the Republican presidential nomination is rising.

Jim Steinman and Meatloaf had it right:
I would ask if he looked in the women’s rest room, but he misses the point I believe, that women want control of their own bodies
Cruz doesn’t acknowledge the Radical Religious Right Republican War on Women because he is a major player in it.
As for the condom issue, Cruz is not a Catholic so in his mind condoms are useful for contraception. Cruz should propose a new law in the U.S. Senate that obliges all unmarried men to use condoms when engaged in sexual intercourse. It could be called the “Cruz Sex Act.” If properly enforced, that would solve women’s reproductive health problem he is now concerned about and make those condom dispensers on bathroom walls he is so familiar with actually useful.
I don’t believe Cruz’s story at all. I think he just made it up. The idea of Cruz plunking 50-cents in a dorm bathroom for a condom is laughable.
Well, then, so is Cruz. What an idiot!
I assume you think that his crazy Fundamentalist father kept young Ted on the straight and narrow so that fornication never entered his brain. In my experience, this sort of family life actually encourages crazy things entering a child’s brain. Of course, lying about something that never occurred is the craziest thing of all.
He’s not just “out of touch with reality” he’s way off in la la land. Someone should ask him if he’s purchased and used a condom each and every time he had sex with anyone. Don’t think so.
Cruz is the “made up nonsense”.
