Here are some of the week’s most notable quotes culled from news reports from across Texas, and beyond.
Glen Maxey, director of county affairs for the Texas Democratic Party, proposing a tongue-in-cheek, economical solution to getting around county clerks who refuse to grant same-sex marriage licenses.
Instead of paying $400 for legal fees for a couple to file a lawsuit, I would prefer to pay $500 for a moving van for them to get out of those hell holes. We’re down to the stems and seeds here.

Former director of the State Bar, Steve Fischer, on the likelihood of success for an official complaint
I think he could very easily be disbarred. He violated his oath to specifically uphold the United States Constitution.

President Jimmy Carter on HuffPost Live, in answer to whether he believes Jesus would have approved of gay marriage.
I believe Jesus would. I don’t have any verse in scripture. … I believe Jesus would approve gay marriage, but that’s just my own personal belief. I think Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else, and I don’t see that gay marriage damages anyone else.

Jim Obergefell, the plaintiff in the Supreme Court’s marriage equality case, responding to the negative reactions to the landmark case.
Religious freedom is still guaranteed by the constitution. There is nothing about marriage equality that forces any single religious person to perform a marriage that they are against, based on their belief. To continue saying that we need freedom of religion and freedom of conscience laws, that’s offensive. That’s saying that those of us who believe in equality have no conscience and that’s incredibly offensive.

Lenore Shefman, an Austin attorney who organized the Big Gay Wedding celebration at the Texas Capitol on Independence Day.
We now pronounce you married. Please kiss.
